How screens disrupt sleep

The human body regulates the sleep-wake cycle through melatonin, a hormone produced as light decreases. The problem is that the blue light emitted by device screens โ€” smartphones, tablets, laptops โ€” signals to the brain that it is still daytime, delaying melatonin production and pushing back the point at which you begin to feel sleepy.

But it is not just the light. The content matters too. Social media is designed to stimulate, to create anticipation, to activate the dopamine system. Scrolling through a news feed or watching short videos before bed keeps the brain in a state of alertness โ€” the opposite of the relaxation needed to fall asleep.

A systematic review published in 2025 in Frontiers in Psychiatry, analysing studies across the full population โ€” not just minors โ€” documented a robust association between increased screen time and adverse sleep outcomes. Adolescents show particular vulnerability, but the pattern extends to adults as well.


The chain of effects

Sleep is not a luxury. It is when the brain consolidates memories, repairs tissue, regulates emotions, and clears metabolic waste accumulated during the day. When sleep is compromised, everything else suffers.

A 2024 study on medical students published in Cureus measured a strong positive correlation (Pearson coefficient: 0.86) between screen time and overall sleep quality. And sleep quality, in turn, influences attentional capacity, cognitive performance, and emotional stability.

A 2025 longitudinal Swedish study โ€” conducted on nearly 5,000 students aged 12 to 16 โ€” identified four mechanisms through which screen time leads to depression: reduced sleep quality, insufficient duration, altered chronobiology, and "social jetlag" (sleeping at different times on weekdays versus weekends). These are not marginal correlations: sleep is the primary pathway through which excessive screen use becomes depressive symptoms.

In adults, the mechanism is similar. Research published in PMC found that night-time screen exposure impacts cognitive function โ€” attention, working memory, processing speed โ€” likely through its interference with sleep quality and quantity.


Adults are already sleeping less than they should

In Italy, as across the rest of Europe, chronic sleep deprivation is underestimated as a public health problem. Seven to eight hours of sleep are recommended for adults. Many sleep six or fewer. Adding a screen at eleven in the evening to that equation does not help.

Sweden, in September 2024, published official recommendations limiting recreational screen time to a maximum of two to three hours per day for adolescents aged 13 to 18, citing sleep as the central rationale. This is not a morally conservative position โ€” it is a data-driven one.


The solution is not just removing screens

Reducing evening screen time leads to measurable improvements. But "reducing" requires more than a good intention.

The problem with self-imposed limits โ€” "I will stop at ten" โ€” is that they collide with the same design architecture that makes them necessary. Platforms do not have a button that says "you have rested enough". The pull-to-refresh does not stop itself.

Behavioural change research suggests that physical friction โ€” an object, a place, a distance โ€” is more effective than digital limits for breaking automatic patterns. Putting your phone in another room has more impact than setting a usage limit in your screen time app.
