First: what "reducing" actually means
Reducing screen time does not mean eliminating technology. It means bringing recreational use — social media, video, purposeless scrolling — to levels that do not interfere with fundamental cognitive, emotional, and physical functions.
Many experts point to roughly 2 hours of daily recreational use as a threshold beyond which negative effects begin to become statistically significant for adults. This is not a magic number, but it is a useful reference point.
Attention and focus
One of the most consistently documented effects of excessive social media use is the fragmentation of attention. Researcher Gloria Mark at the University of California measured, across two decades of observation, that the average attention span on a screen dropped from 2.5 minutes in 2004 to 47 seconds by 2020. This change does not only affect teenagers — it applies to anyone who uses digital devices regularly.
When exposure to the high-speed stimulation of social media is reduced, the brain begins to recover the ability to sustain attention on single tasks for longer periods. This is not an instantaneous phenomenon — but it starts to become measurable within a few weeks.
Sleep quality
As extensively documented by research, reducing screen time — particularly in the evening hours — leads to improvements in sleep quality. Better sleep, in turn, improves mood, working memory, stress resilience, and decision-making capacity.

An OECD report from 2025 clarified that the relationship between screens and wellbeing is complex and depends on many factors — but high and unbalanced use is consistently associated with worse mental health outcomes.
More time for the things that matter
This point seems obvious, but the numbers are striking. If you spend an average of 4 to 5 hours a day on screens for recreational purposes — a conservative estimate for many adults — reducing even to 2 hours frees up 1,000 to 1,500 hours per year. This is not abstract time: it is 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity per day, or a book per month, or more quality time with the people physically around you.
Why it is hard, and what actually works
The difficulty is not awareness — most people already know they use their phone too much. The difficulty is that platforms are designed to defeat individual willpower. The infinite feed has no natural endpoint. Notifications do not wait for a convenient moment. Pull-to-refresh has no obvious offline alternative.
Purely digital limits — timers, in-app blocks — have limited long-term effectiveness because they can be deactivated with two taps at exactly the moment when the urge is strongest — which is precisely when they are needed most.
The behavioural change literature indicates that the most effective strategies combine:
- Real awareness of actual data — knowing how much you use, not estimating it.
- Physical friction — a concrete obstacle that requires deliberate effort to overcome.
- Gradual change — not radical objectives, but small, sustainable increments over time.

Not everything needs to be reduced in the same way. A video call, an intentional online search, a training course: these uses have value. It is passive consumption — scrolling without intention, responding to notifications by reflex — that absorbs time without giving anything equivalent back.
Reducing, therefore, does not mean spending less time online in a generic sense. It means being online when you have chosen to be, for a specific purpose, and offline when you have not chosen to be online.
